Abstract
We study the problem of alpha particle detection by tracks registration in cellulose nitrate. From the analysis of the statistical errors due to track counting with an optical microscope we deduce the number of fields to be observed to know the density of tracks with a given accuracy. This method is applied to the detection of alpha particles emitted in air.
