Radioprotection continues Open Access in 2026 thanks to SFRP support
Paris, France – 24th July, 2026. EDP Sciences and the Société Française de Radioprotection (SFRP) today announce that Radioprotection will continue to publish in Open Access (OA) under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for 2026. While the required subscription threshold was not met during the renewal period, the SFRP has generously covered the financial gap to ensure all content published in 2026 remains freely accessible to the global scientific community.
The S2O model relies on sustained subscription support to transition journals to open access without charging authors Article Processing Charges (APCs). For 2026, despite concerted efforts to reach the necessary subscription levels, the threshold was not achieved through institutional renewals alone. The commitment of the SFRP to the journal's mission and to open science has made it possible to maintain OA status for another year.
"This year's outcome shows both the strengths and the challenges of Subscribe to Open. It is a model we strongly believe in because it enables open access without APCs, but it depends on the continued commitment of the institutions that benefit from it", said Karolina Wojtczak, Journal Publisher, EDP Sciences. "We are sincerely grateful to the SFRP for ensuring that Radioprotection remains open access in 2026 while we continue to work with the community to secure its long-term future."

Radioprotection remains committed to delivering high-quality, peer-reviewed research covering all aspects of radiological protection, including dosimetry, instrument development, epidemiology, biological effects, and risk assessment. The journal publishes in both English and French and serves a global audience of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
Subscribers have full, unconditional access to the content published in the subscription year as well as archives of previous years. About Subscribe-to-Open
Subscribe to Open (S2O) is an alternative open access model that enables subscription journals to transition to open access in a fair, equitable and sustainable way without Article Processing Charges (APCs). First introduced by Annual Reviews and later endorsed by cOAlition S, S2O has been adopted by a growing number of publishers, including EDP Sciences who have come together in the S2O Community of Practice. The model has become an established approach for achieving open access and builds on earlier collaborative initiatives such as SCOAP3 and Knowledge Unlatched.
Following each subscription renewal cycle, journals participating in the S2O programme make all articles accepted during that subscription year immediately open access once the subscription renewal threshold has been reached. Articles are published under a CC-BY 4.0 licence allowing authors to retain copyright while enabling others to share and adapt the content with appropriate attribution. The open access status of S2O journals is determined annually, typically during the first quarter, based on the level of subscription support received.
